Topcon Healthcare has announced the acquisition of Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS), a company specializing in cloud-based retinal screening powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This acquisition will strengthen Topcon’s Healthcare from the Eye initiative and improve early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases.
Enhancing Care Coordination Between Physicians
The Healthcare from the Eye program aims to streamline collaboration between primary care physicians and ophthalmologists. Leveraging IRIS technology, primary care providers will be able to quickly identify patients at risk of eye diseases and refer them to specialists. Ophthalmologists, in turn, will be able to use AI-analyzed data to diagnose systemic and neurological conditions.
Integration with the Harmony Cloud Platform
IRIS will be integrated into Topcon’s Harmony cloud platform, which combines imaging, clinical data, and AI analytics. This will enable more efficient data sharing and decision-making within a unified system.
“With Topcon’s support, we will be able to scale our technology, helping physicians improve diagnostics and reduce disparities in healthcare access,” said Steve Martin, CEO of IRIS.
Scalability and IRIS’s Expertise
Founded in 2012, the IRIS platform has already conducted over 1.8 million screenings and detected more than 279,000 cases of diabetic retinopathy. It is used in 650+ healthcare facilities, including clinics and large medical centers, and is compatible with most cameras and electronic health record systems.
“This move reinforces our strategy of connecting all stages of care through intelligent platforms. IRIS expands the reach of our initiative and enhances care coordination among physicians,” commented Jacques Gilbert, Head of Strategy and Business Development at Topcon Healthcare.
The deal will strengthen Topcon’s position in AI-driven diagnostics and accelerate the adoption of innovative solutions in ophthalmology and primary care.
