Topcon Healthcare, a global leader in medical technology, has announced two strategic moves aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. These include a deal to acquire Toku, Inc. and securing an investment from Sanro Health, Inc. These measures are aimed at revolutionizing predictive and preventive ophthalmology.
A key event was the acquisition of Toku, Inc., a company specializing in AI-driven healthcare solutions. Its platforms enable the assessment of a patient’s overall health by analyzing color fundus photographs. Toku’s technologies are based on one of the world’s largest datasets of retinal images—by the time of the acquisition, the company had analyzed over 4.3 million anonymized images. Integrating these developments into Topcon’s products will allow for a more active use of “oculomics”—the analysis of health through the retina—to provide physicians with predictive information about the risks of various diseases.
Concurrently, Topcon Healthcare announced a strategic partnership and investment from Sanro Health. The joint work will focus on standardizing ophthalmological data for its subsequent analysis and practical application. The Sanro Optimizer tool allows for the integration of electronic medical record and imaging data, creating intelligent patient profiles and helping to identify candidates for clinical trials in real-time, right during a doctor’s appointment.
Together, these developments demonstrate Topcon Healthcare’s commitment to its “Eyecare Healthcare” strategy. The company positions this as the creation of an ecosystem of interconnected medical care that uses artificial intelligence for diagnosing and treating diseases based on non-invasive retinal analysis.
